Biography

Alexander Zeldin was born in England in 1985; early in his career he assisted Peter Brook and Marie-Hélène Estienne and taught at East 15 Acting School of the University of Essex from 2011 to 2014. With “Beyond Caring”, about the lives of cleaners, which premiered at the Yard Theatre in London in 2014, he began his “Inequalities” trilogy, which he continued at the National Theatre with “Love” (2016) and “Faith, Hope and Charity” (2019). He develops his plays through long research in the milieus concerned and often works with people who have no acting training. Later works include “The Confessions” (2023, Wiener Festwochen) and “The Other Place”, after Sophocles’ “Antigone” (2024, National Theatre), both of which he also directed. Zeldin was associate director at Birmingham Repertory Theatre and at the National Theatre, has been an associate artist at the Odéon-Théâtre de l’Europe in Paris since 2020 and founded his company A Zeldin Company in 2022. He received the Quercus Trust Award in 2015 and was made a Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres in 2024; in the same year the Schaubühne in Berlin presented him as Artist in Focus at its FIND festival.
