1817 – 1903 · Russian

Biography

Alexander Vasilyevich Sukhovo-Kobylin was born in Moscow in 1817, studied there until 1838, and subsequently attended lectures in philosophy in Heidelberg and Berlin. In 1850 he was suspected of murdering his mistress, the Parisian milliner Louise Simon-Demanche, and was acquitted only in 1857 after a drawn-out proceeding marked by bribery. Out of this experience grew his dramatic trilogy Scenes from the Past — Krechinsky’s Wedding, The Case and The Death of Tarelkin — which exposes the arbitrariness and corruption of Russian officialdom and justice. In 1902 he became an honorary member of the Saint Petersburg Academy of Sciences; he died in Beaulieu-sur-Mer, France, in 1903.
