Biography
Alexander Sergeyevich Pushkin was born in Moscow in 1799 and is regarded as the founder of modern Russian literary language. Alongside verse novels such as „Eugene Onegin“, he wrote the history drama „Boris Godunov“ (composed in 1825) in the style of Shakespeare, exploring power, legitimacy and the people's role in Russian history. His outspoken, anti-authoritarian stance repeatedly brought him into conflict with tsarist censorship, which also blocked the stage premiere of „Boris Godunov“ for decades. Pushkin died in St Petersburg in 1837 from wounds sustained in a duel.
