Alexander Sergejewitsch Gribojedow

Biography

Alexander Sergeyevich Griboyedov was born in Moscow in 1795, entered Moscow University at the age of eleven and studied literature, law, and physics and mathematics there; besides Russian he spoke fluent French, German, English, Italian and Persian. After brief military service during the Napoleonic Wars he entered the diplomatic service, serving as secretary of the Russian mission in Tehran from 1819 to 1821 and then at the seat of the Caucasus viceroy in Tiflis. Following the Decembrist uprising of 1825 he was held for four months on suspicion of complicity before being released for lack of evidence. In 1828 he negotiated the Treaty of Turkmenchay as Russia's envoy, ending the war with Persia; appointed Russian minister to Tehran soon after, he was killed there in February 1829 when a mob stormed the mission.
