Biography
Alexander Kerlin was born in Gifhorn in 1980 and studied theatre studies, economics and psychology in Erlangen and Bochum. From 2010 to 2019 he was a dramaturg at Schauspiel Dortmund, where he co-founded the Academy for Theatre and Digitality and developed works with artistic director Kay Voges such as “Das Goldene Zeitalter” (2013) and “Die Borderline Prozession” (2016), which was invited to the Berlin Theatertreffen in 2017; “Das Internat” (2018), written with Matthias Seier, was also selected for the Theatertreffen in 2019. He then worked as a dramaturg at the Burgtheater in Vienna (2019–2023), where he championed the rediscovery of women writers such as Maria Lazar, and as head dramaturg at the Volkstheater Wien (2023–2025). There Voges staged Kerlin’s play “Bullet Time”, about the photographer Eadweard Muybridge, in September 2024; it is published by S. Fischer Theater & Medien. Since the 2025/26 season Kerlin has been chief dramaturg at Schauspiel Köln, where “Imagine” was created with Voges and the ensemble in 2025 and the premiere of his play “Moneyland” is scheduled for September 2026. In 2014 he received the NRW Förderpreis for young artists.
