Biography
Alessandro Scarlatti was born in Palermo in 1660, received his early musical training probably in Rome under Giacomo Carissimi, and from 1679 served as maestro di cappella to Queen Christina of Sweden. In 1684 he became court maestro di cappella in Naples, later also at Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome, before returning to the service of the Neapolitan viceroy. As founder of the Neapolitan school of opera, he decisively shaped the operatic form of his time through the fast-slow-fast "Italian" overture and the expanded da capo aria. Of his more than 115 operas, "Griselda" (1721) is among the last and the only one to survive complete; he died in Naples in 1725.
