Biography

Alessandro Baricco was born on 25 January 1958 in Turin, where he studied philosophy and music. He initially worked as a music critic and journalist for several Italian newspapers and hosted the television programme "Pickwick" about literature. In 1991 he debuted with the novel "Castelli di rabbia", followed by "Oceano Mare" in 1993 and the widely performed stage monologue "Novecento" in 1994. His novella "Seta" (1996) became his greatest international success. In 1994 Baricco founded the Scuola Holden, a school for creative writing, in Turin. His work has been honoured with, among others, the Premio Viareggio and the Prix Médicis étranger.
