Biography
Aleksis Kivi, born Alexis Stenvall, was born on 10 October 1834 in the village of Palojoki near Nurmijärvi and died on 31 December 1872 in Tuusula. From 1846 he attended school in Helsinki and in 1859 began studying at the University of Helsinki, which he left to devote himself entirely to writing. Over roughly a decade he produced, among other works, the rural comedy Nummisuutarit (1864) and Seven Brothers (1870), the first major novel written in Finnish. Harsh criticism of his work, poverty and illness marked his final years. His birthday is now observed in Finland as the Day of Finnish Literature.
