Biography
Alberto Ginastera was born in Buenos Aires in 1916 and studied at the National Conservatory there. His early works drew on Argentine folk material to create a distinctive national idiom, before he increasingly turned to twelve-tone technique, microtonality and aleatoric writing from the 1950s onward. His operas Don Rodrigo, Bomarzo and Beatrix Cenci rank among the most ambitious Latin American stage works of the twentieth century; Bomarzo was initially banned in Argentina over its explicit content. In 1969 Ginastera left the country in protest at the political climate and settled in Geneva, where he died in 1983.
