Alberto Franchetti

1860 – 1942 · Italian

Biography

Alberto Franchetti was born on 18 September 1860 into a wealthy Jewish family in Turin and died on 4 August 1942 in Viareggio. He studied first in Venice, then at the Munich Conservatory under Josef Rheinberger and in Dresden under Felix Draeseke. His debut opera "Asrael" (1888) and above all "Germania" (1902), premiered at La Scala in Milan under Arturo Toscanini, made him one of the most successful Italian opera composers of his generation. From 1926 to 1928 he directed the Florence Conservatory. After Italy's 1938 racial laws, his works were banned from the stage, and he died a few years later largely forgotten.
