Biography
Albert Roussel was born on 5 April 1869 in Tourcoing and joined the French navy at 18, undertaking voyages to Southeast Asia whose impressions later found their way into his music. In 1894 he gave up his naval career to study composition with Vincent d'Indy at the Schola Cantorum in Paris, where he himself taught from 1902 to 1914, numbering Erik Satie and Edgard Varèse among his pupils. Service with the Red Cross in the First World War undermined his health; he then retired to Brittany and devoted himself entirely to composition, including the opera Padmâvatî, premiered in 1923. Roussel died on 23 August 1937 in Royan.
