Biography
Albéric Magnard was born in Paris in 1865, the son of Figaro editor-in-chief Francis Magnard, and turned to music after studying law. At the Conservatoire he studied with Théodore Dubois, then from 1888 to 1892 with Vincent d'Indy at the Schola Cantorum, where his first opera "Yolande" and his First Symphony were written. He deliberately kept his distance from Parisian musical circles and financed his own works; he never saw his principal opera, "Guercœur", staged. On 3 September 1914 he single-handedly defended his country house at Baron-sur-Oise against German soldiers, opened fire, and died when the house burned down, destroying many of his manuscripts.
