1817 – 1871 · French

Biography

Aimé Maillart was born on 24 March 1817 in Montpellier and studied composition from 1833 at the Paris Conservatoire under Fromental Halévy and Aimé Leborne, and violin under Guérin; in 1841 he won the Prix de Rome with the cantata 'Lionel Foscari'. On his return from Rome, his opera 'Gastibelza' opened the newly founded Opéra-National in Paris in 1847. His greatest success came in 1856 with the comic opera 'Les dragons de Villars', which remained part of the Opéra-Comique repertoire for decades and, in German translation as 'Das Glöckchen des Eremiten', also became popular in Germany. He was made a Chevalier of the Légion d'honneur in 1860 and died on 26 May 1871 in Moulins, where he had fled during the siege of Paris.
