Biography

Adolph Green was born in the Bronx in 1914 to Hungarian immigrant parents. In 1937 he met Leonard Bernstein at a summer camp; in the late 1930s he founded the troupe The Revuers with Betty Comden and Judy Holliday, which performed sketches and songs at the Village Vanguard. On the Town (1944, music by Bernstein), in which Comden and Green also appeared on stage, began their Broadway partnership of some sixty years, which includes Wonderful Town (1953), Bells Are Ringing (1956), On the Twentieth Century (1978) and The Will Rogers Follies (1991). For Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer the duo wrote the screenplays for Singin' in the Rain (1952) and The Band Wagon (1953) and received two Academy Award nominations. Green was honoured with several Tony Awards, induction into the American Theater Hall of Fame in 1981 and the Kennedy Center Honors in 1991. He died in New York in 2002.
