Adolf Schütz was born in Vienna in 1895 and attended the k.u.k. Staatsschule there before training from 1913 at the Academy of Music and Performing Arts; he was drafted for military service in 1915. From 1918 he worked as a stage actor, among other engagements at the Neue Wiener Bühne under Emil Geyer in the early 1920s, and served for a time as theatre manager at the Staatstheater Karlsbad. In November 1938 he fled the Nazi regime to Finland, moving on to Sweden in January 1940, where he lived until his death in Stockholm in 1974, working mainly as a screenwriter.
