Biography

Aaron Copland was born on 14 November 1900 in Brooklyn, New York, to Lithuanian-Jewish immigrant parents. In the 1920s he studied in Fontainebleau and Paris with Nadia Boulanger, whose teaching profoundly shaped him. With ballets such as "Billy the Kid" (1938), "Rodeo" (1942) and "Appalachian Spring" (1944), and orchestral works such as "Fanfare for the Common Man", he forged an accessible, distinctly American musical idiom. He won the 1945 Pulitzer Prize for Music for "Appalachian Spring" and an Academy Award for his score to "The Heiress" (1949). Also active as a conductor and teacher, Copland died on 2 December 1990 in North Tarrytown, New York.
